An Interview with Dennis Perrin on the Savage Mules and Obama
Dennis Perrin is the author of “Mr Mike: The Life and Work of Michael O’Donoghue, The Man Who Made Comedy Dangerous.” “American Fan: Sports Mania and the Culture That Feeds It” and “Savage Mules: The Democrats and Endless War“. He has written jokes for Bill Maher and countless other comics, some of whom have run for public office.
Q: In a youtube video you posted in March called “Revolutionary Road” you discussed Bill Moyer’s show with the socialist Mike Davis, and reacted to the show by suggesting that if socialism can’t gain ground today, if class consciousness and some form of solidarity can’t be established now that the economy is in the tank, that it would never happen. Why do you think that academic socialists like Mike Davis feel so defeated, and why is it so difficult to get people to see their own interests even now?
A: I think there are two words: Barack Obama. I mean, the Obama phenomena, first the candidacy, then the nomination, and then the presidency, have had a tremendous effect on marginalizing and neutralizing any potential progressive dissent. There are people I respect and even admire in some ways who think that Obama can be pushed, and that whatever he says to the media, or to the Washington Press Corps, or to his corporate benefactors, or whomever actually holds the real power in this country, he’s sort of winking at us over on the left saying, yeah I’ve got your back. “I know what you guys want, but you’ve got to give me time. Let me get into this power structure, make them comfortable, find out where I can work my magic.” This sort of thing.
