The UK edition of Shlomo Sand’s controversial international bestseller The Invention of the Jewish People will be published on Monday 9th November.
Just published in the US, the thesis is attracting considerable attention. Writing in the Tablet Magazine, Evan R. Goldstein explores the main strands of Sand’s argument, related texts and the critical responses to Sand’s original Hebrew edition. Exploring the author’s personal and family background, Goldstein analyses the affects of Sand’s politics on his scholarship, including the loaded issues of a ‘one-state solution’ and the ‘right of return’ .
Sand is quoted stating ‘America will be the real battle’, with sympathizers fearing “that the inherent shock value of The Invention of the Jewish People will cause the American media to sensationalize Sand’s thesis”. With the U.S. release of this seminal text iminent, supporters and detractors alike “are closely watching to see if the book becomes a mainstream publishing controversy or vanishes into the esoteric precincts of academe”.
